Female hair loss can be an embarrassing problem. Most people do not like to talk about it and are embarrassed to even mention it with their physician. However, about twenty percent of women suffer some type of hair loss. Hair loss affects a women’s appearance which in turn can negatively affect her self esteem.
There are signs of female hair loss as well as causes. Some of the signs that a problem may be occurring are possible thinning of hair all over the head or it can also be a specific spot. Differing than men, most of the time the front hairline remains intact in female hair loss.
Female pattern balding is another type of condition that afflicts women. This condition rarely leads to total baldness. However, sometimes it will present itself by balding near the crown or the hair thins over the person’s entire head.
There are various causes of female hair loss. Hormones are the number one factor in hair loss. Many women lose a significant amount of hair after pregnancy, menopause or times of severe distress. These times cause a major flux of hormones that seems to trigger the hair loss. There are many other reasons for the problem such as thyroid, liver or pituitary gland issues. Anemia, a vitamin or mineral deficiency or allergies can even cause the problem. Side effects of medications can sometimes lead to hair loss. It has been found that lead or mercury poisoning can cause one to lose their hair. One of the side effects from a recent Hepatitis B vaccination can be hair loss.
Some women suffer from eating disorders such as bulimia or anorexia and once their body systems are affected so much from actually starving themselves, they can lose their hair. Finally if a woman does too much chemical processing or coloring of their hair, they may find a problem with this also.
Hair loss can be a problem with women or men. Women tend to have a more difficult time coping with the problem since it does affect their appearance in a drastic manner. Some of the causes of female hair loss can be prevented by maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
